General Practitioners earn on average £82,500 per year.
In addition to the basic salary, professionals who start working for the NHS enjoy 27 days of vacation per year plus mandatory national rest days such as Christmas and New Year. These 27 days increase to 29 after 5 years of service.
Another benefit is the attractive state pension to which the worker will be entitled when he/she reaches retirement age.
Every legal resident in the United Kingdom is entitled to social security and economic benefits in case he/she is unable to work. (Note that permanent residence is obtained after 5 years of working in the country). Before becoming a resident, the worker is entitled to social security but does not have access to economic benefits from the state.
In addition to the benefits of working for the NHS, the employee and his or her family will enjoy a multicultural lifestyle in the United Kingdom where the government has made great strides in equality with respect to sexual orientation, age, creed, political orientation, race, gender, etc.
The UK also has easy access to the rest of Europe by air, rail or sea. Typical holiday destinations (apart from the UK per se) are Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Poland, etc. There are daily flights to all these countries from different airports at reasonable prices.
In summary, living and working in the United Kingdom offers the opportunity to have the support of British social security and its long-term benefits. On the recreational side, the UK is an excellent starting point to get to know the rest of Europe and benefit from its rich culture.
